United dipped their toe in the transfer market on Thursday and brought Ian Mitchell back from Newcastle United, just fourteen months after his move from Tayside to Tyneside. Going the other way was Alec Reid, who had been at United since swapping Ibrox for Tannadice in 1968. Looking for an immediate bounce back from the 5-1 defeat to Rangers, Jerry Kerr named Mitchell in his starting eleven, in place of Reid. There were further changes, as Alan Gordon dropped to the bench for Sandy White and Doug Smith (having recovered from a broken toe) came back into the side filling the void left by Alan Devlin.
A Jackie Copland through ball after only thirty seconds sent Doug Smith clear but the returning Tangerine hit the woodwork. It took only four minutes for United to go in front though when Jackie Copland latched on to a Jim Cameron cross to shoot home the opener. Dom Sullivan should have done better in the 25th minute for Clyde, having tamely lobbed the ball straight into the arms of Hamish McAlpine. The United 'keeper was called into action shortly after when Joe McBride unleashed a 15 yard effort which was tipped over the bar and a minute later, he had to do the same from a Danny McGrain strike.
United went further ahead in the 66th minute. A pin-point Andy Rolland pass found Sandy White and the young winger wriggled through the home rearguard to net with a right foot shot. The points were well and truly secured just two minutes from the end when a Jackie Copland cross was turned into the net by Jim Henry.
