With United well in control after the 1st leg at Bayview, manager Jim McLean handed a first team debut to 19 year-old full-back Derek Murray, and ex-Hibs striker Joe Ward returned to the starting eleven after being an unused substitute at the weekend.

Ten minutes into the match,an Eamonn Bannon cross broke for Joe Ward to score with a glorious volley from ten yards out to put United 1-0 up. Bannon himself almost scored five minutes later, lobbing the ball inches over the bar after a great run from the half-way line. A great move between Payne, Addison and Sturrock ended with Ward grazing the bar with a header. In 32 minutes a Hegarty back-header from a Payne corner let Sturrock in to touch home, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Payne headed straight at Gorman when only four yards out, and Ward missed from six yards out after a low cross from Kirkwood just before the interval as the one way traffic continued.

The second half resumed with Gorman saving well from Payne, but he was finally beaten again five minutes into the second half, when a Paul Hegarty header from a Payne corner put United further ahead. United rained shots in on the Fifers' goal, where Gorman was a hero, especially in stopping one shot from Kirkwood. Joe Ward scored his third goal in three matches when he headed home after a fine run and cross from Eamonn Bannon in the 61st minute. Eighteen year-old striker John Reilly made his first team debut, coming on for Derek Stark in the 65 minute, and four minutes later an Addison shot was blocked on the line. Reilly had two attempts which were saved by Gorman, and with 12 minutes to go, McAlpine had his first real save of the match, dealing with a Thomson effort. Graeme Payne cracked home the fourth in the 90th minute from an impossible angle as the Cup-holders progressed with ease.
