Match Report

For the visit to Fir Park, Alan Combe replaced Paul Gallacher in goal, while Russell Latapy and Mark Wilson dropped to the bench, replaced by Gary Bollan and Craig Easton.

James McFadden shot wide in the opening minute for Motherwell before a Stephen Pearson free kick provided a threat minutes later, dealt with by the United back line. Moments later, McFadden nearly scored at the wrong end, nodding a Stuart Duff cross just onto the bar and over in what was United's first chance. It was Motherwell who opened the scoring though, on 10 minutes; Pearson latching on to a loose ball from a Derek Adams free kick to knock the ball home. Derek Adams very nearly made it 2-0 with a hooked effort just over the bar soon after. For United, Charlie Miller played a one-two with Jim McIntyre on the edge of the Motherwell area, but his weak shot was held by Steve Woods. With three minutes of the half remaining, Jim Paterson sent over a fine cross for Miller, but the midfielder directed his header over the bar.

Five minutes from the restart, United equalised. Waltzing past the Motherwell defence, Charlie Miller carried a loose ball forward into the box before clipping the ball into the top corner with the outside of his left foot. A spectacular goal! Woods was called into action again soon after producing saves from McIntyre and Paterson to prevent an away lead. On the hour mark, a Paterson effort is beaten away by Woods. After an hour, both sides were pushing to take the lead, resulting in end to end action and chances fall to McFadden for Motherwell and Andy Tod for United. Attacking changes for both sides resulting in a free flowing game as McFadden again shot wide for Motherwell before Richard Offiong also missed the target for Motherwell. The breakthrough came for United on 83 minutes though, when Jim McIntyre won space in the box before firing an unstoppable shot past Woods. United's joy was short lived, however, as Tony Vaughan bundled a Pearson corner home just two minutes later to level again. The remainder of the match and stoppage time heralded no further goals and a good game of football ended with both sides taking a point.
