Match Report

Two goals from Jon Daly were enough to give United a 2-0 victory in their last-ever visit to Love Street this afternoon.

It took United less than 60 seconds to force a save out of Mark Howard in the Saints’ goal, after Paul Dixon lobbed the ball into the box. Sandaza flicked the ball into the path of Daly, whose effort was palmed wide by the ‘keeper.

Daly had another opportunity on goal just moments later, heading over from Gomis’s cross.

St Mirren came close to grabbing the lead in the seventh minute, after an innocuous looking free kick from Miranda was headed back into the danger area by Dixon. Andy Dorman collected the ball and his shot deflected off Wyness before nestling on the roof of Zaluska’s net.

United took the lead after 37-minutes, when Willo Flood delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Daly’s blistering header left Howard no chance as it powered past the ‘keeper into the top right hand corner of the net.

The home side should have been back on level terms just after the restart. Franco Miranda broke down the left flank and cut the ball back into the path of an unmarked Dennis Wyness in the box. But the year-long goal drought plaguing the striker continued – he last scored against Gretna in October 2007 – as he fired high and wide from eight yards out with the net gaping.

Flood could have doubled United’s advantage on 75 minutes, after Dixon fed the ball through to substitute Craig Conway. With his first touch of the ball, he fired it into the path of Flood, whose diving header was just the wrong side of the post.

Daly then zipped a 20-yard volley goal wards on 78 minutes, forcing a superb save out of Howard. In the closing stages, St Mirren should have secured the equaliser they had threatened to grab but for some woeful finishing. However Billy Mehmet failed to take his sixth of the season, and fired well over the bar after Jim Hamilton squared the ball across goal.

And with a minute left on the clock, United ensured there would be no injury time comeback when Jack Ross tumbled Conway over inside the box to win a penalty. Daly stepped up to grab his second of the match, as he slotted the ball firmly into the left hand corner of Howard’s net.
