Match Report

Victory was essential for United if they were to overhaul Celtic and claim second place. Despite this, goalmouth activity was at a premium.

The first incident of note came after 65 minutes when Pat Bonner brought off a tremendous double save. First he threw himself full length to block a shot from Tom Coyne and followed it up to deny Paul Sturrock. The Parkhead side took the lead in the 74th minute when Dave Narey illegally ended Brian McClairs mazy run on the edge of the box. Murdo MacLeod stepped up to blast home the free kick. Ten minutes from time Alex Taylor, who was on the point of being substituted, slung over a cross which Tom Coyne nodded down for Paul Sturrock to equalise and rescue a point.
