One of the original twelve member clubs when the English Football League was established in 1888, the club won their first major honour in 1946 when they won the FA Cup, but found themselves in the third tier of English football in 1955. Back in the Second Division two years later, it wasn't until the appointment of Brian Clough as manager in 1967 that the clubs fortunes changed. After taking them back to the First Division, they won the League Championship in 1972 and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1973. After Clough's departure, they won the Championship once more in 1975 before dropping down the Leagues again, eventually settling to spend most of their time in the second tier. It was during Clough's time as manager that Jerry Kerr's United faced the English side, meeting in the 1st Round of the Texaco Cup. After a demolition at the Baseball Ground, United managed to save some face by winning the 2nd leg at Tannadice. Clough would later have a strong friendship with Jim McLean, who would take over the managers position at Tannadice just 3 months later.
